Happiness Is . . .

Happiness Is . . .

We’ve covered extensively in this blog that Jason is Canadian and is always hot. He thinks anything over seventy degrees is warm. If it is a dry day with bright sunshine he can walk around in forty degree weather in just a long sleeved shirt and feel comfortable. I cannot relate to this. At 70 degrees I’m walking around in a long sleeved shirt and feeling comfortable and I have no idea how anyone could comfortable wearing this at forty degrees. Today Jason told me we needed another water trough. So we made a short trip to Tractor Supply...

It Was a Dark and Stormy Night . . .

Jason and I were both a bit on the cranky side today. Neither of us has what would be described as a good night’s sleep last night. We had some thunderstorms last night which were the cause of our troubles. Usually I sleep well in both rain and thunderstorms, I guess the noise soothes me, but we have a saying around here “if Jason isn’t sleeping no one is sleeping.” Jason channels his inner Goldilocks when it comes to sleeping. Everything has to be just right. We have ongoing and often volatile thermostat wars. Jason grew up in Canada...

Scarlett O’Hara Moments

Our wonderful vet from Tennessee Equine Hospital was at the farm today. He was looking around and commenting, as he often does, that when he thinks of the perfect life for a horse our set up is what he thinks of. It is always nice to hear these things from your vet! As he continued looking around and enjoying the view he noticed a broken fence board. This is pretty out of character for us so he commented on it. The broken board was in a section of fenceline that separates a pasture with mares from a pasture with...

Fun with Construction

As everyone knows when you have a big (or sometimes even a small) construction project the inevitable budget busters come along. We’ve had a couple of them already. We underestimated the cost to finish the interior of the barn. Actually we were pretty accurate with all of the costs with the exception of electricity. The barn is well off the road, and the cost to move the electrical service that far was not a small number. It makes me seriously dread what the cost will be to run electricity to the second barn after it is built. Our other...

Cicadas

Not a lot to report around here except the thirteen year cicadas have arrived in full force. They are incredibly loud. Although they are harmless they are also very creepy looking with their beady red eyes staring at you. Bella the dog likes to eat them which is fine with me. This afternoon as I was preparing dinner for the horses a cicada landed on top of the feed in one of the feed bags. Obviously I couldn’t just leave it there. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a fan of creepy looking things so spiders,...

Construction Update

Construction continues at the new farm. We have a hay barn under construction that should be finished in the next couple of days. There is also a bulldozer at work doing some clearing work to make way for more fencing. After another day of dozer work we’re hoping to get going on some more fence. After the hay barn is completed we’re still got three more run-in sheds, another barn, never ending fence work (around another 18,000 feet to go I think), plus additional water lines, another electric service, extending the driveway and whatever else I’ve blocked from my...

In Memory of Harmony

Yesterday we had to say goodbye to Harmony, a beautiful gray thoroughbred mare who had lived with us since 2006. Harmony was 31.5 years old, and until very recently I used to joke that she was going to outlive me. Age was just a number to Harmony and she had the energy and the spunkiness of a three year old. Unfortunately things began changing quickly and it became apparent that Harmony was not going to outlive me after all. Harmony and her BFF Lacy travelled to our farm from Canada (near Toronto) in 2006. Harmony and Lacy had lived...

Melissa Breaks a Sweat

There is a law somewhere that says Southern girls aren’t allowed to sweat. At the very most, when the heat and humidity reach sauna like intensity, a faint glow of perspiration coats their brow which they gently wipe away with a lace cloth. A brief wave of a funeral home fan followed by a sip of mint julep and a short commentary along the lines of, “Goodness, it’s warm!” puts everything right in their world again. Or so the story goes anyway. I’ve written at some length in previous posts about our thermostat wars, our time in Vermont and...

Horse People are Neat

It is pretty typical to hear about how crazy us horse people are. I’ll admit I even say it sometimes. But then again I think anyone who has a true passion for something can be referred to as “crazy” by people who don’t know what it is like to have that kind of passion. The biggest three day event in North America happened last weekend, the Dutch and Murphy Alex, Darby, B-Rad, Boo and Chili Spike and Lucky Regis and Noble O’Reilly and Lightening Levendi, Baby and Thomas Chance Romeo trying his best to flirt with Silky who was...
