All Calories Are Not Equal

(post by Jason) Back in the fall I completed a ration analysis for a client located in one of the warmer parts of the southeastern US. One of her horses presented as more than a little perplexing. The client told me that in spite of everything she was doing the horse simply would not gain weight; not a normal condition for a fifteen year old well adjusted but semi-retired gelding. His environmental situation was pretty good too. He spent roughly eight hours a day in his stall and was turned out with three friends in a generous, well maintained...

Level 5 – Normal

I feel like I should hand over the reins of this blog to the National Weather Service as the weather seems to be the dominant theme lately. They would probably do a better job of simply informing you of the weather while skipping the rest of the complaining commentary.   The good news: the last 8 days have been delightful. They have delivered lots of sunshine and much warmer temperatures. When the thermometer hits 75 I cannot complain and we saw that a few times. Yesterday and today were the cold days with the highs in the upper 50s. Even...

Busy – but Warm!

We knew this week was going to be busy as we had days booked with both the farrier and the dentist. When you are scheduling appointments for February the saying that comes to mind is “life is like a box of chocolates and you just never know what you are going to get.” Our last couple of farrier days were less than ideal thanks to the charming weather brought to us courtesy of polar vortexes. Those definitely were not days when I was thinking about how awesome it was to work outside. Yesterday and today were stellar though. In...

Mental and Physical Health

Melissa and I have done several posts on the mechanics of transitioning horses to our set up when they first arrive at our farm. Today I’d like to come at this topic from a slightly different angle by talking about how the right physical settings can help adjust a horse’s mental state by minimizing stressors. This is particularly relevant for us as quite a number of horses that arrive here come with considerable mental and physical baggage.  Like some people, some horses adapt to changes quite readily and are instantly happy in nearly any situation. Other horses don’t handle...

Stepping Up To The Plate

As I mentioned in my last post no one was stepping up to the plate and fulfilling expected roles. We had a major snow event on the way and everyone was trying to sleep through it. No State of Emergency from TEMA, Giles County hadn’t closed the schools, Jason forgot to take the battery out of the tractor. It was like everyone forgot we were still living in the south. I realize we have had a decidedly un-southern winter but come on everyone, we all have roles and responsibilities here!! Shortly after I published the blog post on Tuesday...

Glimmer of Hope

If we can survive the next 24-ish hours, and if our weather forecast has even a remote chance of being correct, we may finally be getting a break from this miserable time of year known as winter. Even better I  might feel like complaining writing about something other than the weather. If you have read this blog in the last five weeks you might have noticed that the weather has been, well, awful.  However we do have to get through the next 24-ish hours and supposedly that might prove to be kind of difficult. The weather models show that...

Technical Issues

After going around in circles with blogger for almost an hour I am throwing in the towel for the evening. We’ll try again later.  At the moment I consider it a minor miracle that blogger finally agreed to publish these three...

F Is For . . .

I spent a lot of time in the month of January wishing for warmer weather. After dealing with polar vortexes 1, 2 and 3 I was pretty over the whole thing. The universe finally took note of my wishes and we have had much more normal temperatures the last several days. However in a classic case of “be careful what you ask for because you just might get it” Mother Nature has now gifted us with a deluge of rain. Last night it rained quite a bit overnight, then cleared up for several hours today, and then it started...
